Marriage enquiries should be made as early as possible, please, and the date should always be discussed with us before other arrangements (such as the reception) have been booked. We can assist with arrangements for music, flowers etc., to help make the day truly memorable. We will normally contact you to arrange preparation for your marriage approximately three months before the ceremony.
Please note that if either party has previously been married to someone else who is still alive, special circumstances apply: we will discuss these with you.
To book a Wedding
Please come along to either St Andrew's or St Mary's on a Sunday morning and introduce yourself, when we will give you a leaflet about the service and an application form.
Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child or Baptism (Christening)?
The birth or adoption of a child is a cause for great celebration. Many people are overcome by a sense of awe at the creation of new life and want to express their thanks to God.
We now offer a short service giving an opportunity for parents and families to give thanks for the new child and to pray for their family life. This service may be a private celebration at home, or a public celebration in church. During the service we hear a reading from the Bible, the child is named and blessed, the family is presented with some gospel stories, and then the child, parents and supporters are prayed for.
This service is not the same as Baptism (also called Christening).
Baptism is a response to God’s love and entry into the membership of the Church. In Baptism parents and Godparents declare their Christian faith and make promises to help the new member take their place in the life and worship of the Church. The child is signed with the cross of Christ, washed in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and presented with a candle to remind them to shine as a light in the world.
The service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child may happen at any time and may be followed by Baptism in church at a later date.
Times of Baptism
Baptism will normally take place during the Family Service, or at 3pm on the Sunday before the Family Service, in which case it is expected that the newly baptised person attends the following Sunday to be welcomed into the church family and to receive their Baptism certificate and candle. The Family Service in Henlow is on the first Sunday of the month and in Langford it is on the third Sunday in the month.
Times of Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child
Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child will normally take place on a Sunday afternoon but can be arranged for another time in consultation with a Priest. This service would not normally take place as part of the main Sunday service.
Who may be Baptised
Any adult expressing a sincere desire for Baptism and who is willing to make a declaration of their Christian Faith will be welcome for Baptism. Any child resident in the Parish or having close family connections with the parish church will also be welcome for Baptism. However, in this case the Church law requirements relating to Godparents must be fulfilled. These include that they must be Baptised and preferably Confirmed.
A member of the Baptism Team will visit the parents at home. This visit will finalise details and explain the service. In the case of Baptism this will also include a discussion about the importance of the promises made by parents and Godparents and their responsibilities.
To book a Thanksgiving or a Baptism
Please come along to either St Andrew's or St Mary's on a Sunday morning and introduce yourself, when we will give you a leaflet containing this information and an application form.
